What this page is / is not

Is: A careful visitor guide to Lost River Cave in Bowling Green — boat tour logistics framing, accessibility honesty, and surface valley trails when boats cancel.

Is not: A secret-entrance list, a Jesse James myth encyclopedia, or a live inventory of every tour slot. Cite the preserve for hours and prices.

Why this stop

Lost River Cave is an urban 72-acre park built around a karst window and underground river segment — a low-commitment way to see Kentucky cave country without a Mammoth Cave ticket scramble. The signature product is a guided valley walk + underground boat ride, run by the preserve (not NPS).

Good for: mixed-age groups, I-65 travelers, first underground exposure.
Not for: wheelchair/scooter cave access (see preserve accessibility note below), or DIY wild caving.

Accessibility (preserve language — do not soften)

The preserve states the boat tour is not accessible for wheelchairs or scooters. Guests with walkers or canes must navigate stairs, ramps, and boarding independently; staff cannot assist with mobility aids. Their page notes a ~30° slope, stairs on the walk, steps at boarding, boat sway, water depth along the route, and a low-ceiling section where guests must bend (chin toward knee). A free video of the tour is available at the Visitors Center for an above-ground option. Vehicles may access the cave entrance at designated times on request — ask the preserve, not us.

When boats cancel

Historic Cave Entrance walking tours are offered only when boat tours must be canceled (per preserve). Pricing published for that walking product: $12 ages 4+; free ages 3 and under — verify live. Use the valley trails and karst window as a surface karst day if underground access is off.

Careful visitor notes

  • This is still cave ethics country: stay with the guide, leave formations and wildlife alone, pack out trash.
  • Urban setting ≠ private-land free-for-all on adjacent property.
  • Pair with cave-safety-basics and Mammoth / Diamond articles if you are building a south-central Kentucky cave weekend.
